Statement
Working from multiple sources of inspiration, Lindsay finds that depicting hybrid animals work as a metaphor for his sense of not belonging and his feelings of being ‘other’. His latest works include dark dramatic misshapen animal forms that Lindsay calls ‘creatures of consequence’ are also representations of his mental health state. Lindsay has battled with depression dealing with loss throughout his life and this ‘loss’ is also the loss of humanity in the monsters that he has depicted in his work.
He finds images of animals online and then tends to modify such imagery to suit his own creations. Merging often more than one species to create a ‘sub’ species. The idea of ‘otherness’ can come from what doesn’t conform to normality or what may be ‘out there’ in the universe. These ‘subspecies’ also serve as ‘consequences’ of the tampering of Mother Nature by the human race’s disregard of the environment and how the ‘genetic hybrids’ are vying for revenge to take back the earth.
Lindsay also draws inspiration from many Sci-Fi and Fantasy films whereby the creatures often seen in movies have inspired him. The depiction of alien landscapes in different films has also made references in his art.
